Very few artists make classic-sounding soul ballads these days, but that’s exactly what South East London singer-songwriter Only Girl (aka Ellen Murphy) has done with ‘Fall’. Inviting the luscious voice of James Vickery to pair with her own impressive vocals, ‘Fall’ is relatively simple in composition, with gospel keys, intermittent guitar, and breathy backing vocals as the setting for this straight-up blissful love song. If you’ve been paying attention to Only Girl’s recent return, you’ll know that these new songs result from cathartically pouring her emotion into music following the attack on her now-husband Jamie McKechnie in 2011. Since then, the couple have overcome unimaginable hurdles, grown closer together and got married. It’s a journey that Only Girl is sharing with us in songs like ‘Fall’ and ‘Mountain’, and we applaud her bravery in doing so. - HT
